Mission: The fundamental purpose of the WDSA as at 1 April 2024 was to complete the work required to achieve international recognition of the Wairarapa for its world class dark skies (amongst the best in the world). This had been achieved on 19 January 2023 when the International Dark Sky Association awarded WDSA Reserve status for the area of the Wairarapa covered by the Carterton District council and the South Wairarapa District Council. Now that Reserve stated is achieved, the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve Incorporated went through the process of a rule change to change its name to now be a Reserve and focused its resources on implementing its proposed structure that will assure the IDA Dark Sky Reserve status is made permanent. It is also assisting its neighbour the Masterton District Council to achieve Dark Sky Reserve status for its area. When complete, the entire Wairarapa region will be an International Dark Sky Reserve.
