Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society (Incorporated)
About
The Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society Incorporated was formed to save the historically important original Carterton Railway station (built 1880) from planned demolition in 1990. Over time the station has evolved into a railway museum & is home to an historically important collection of New Zealand railway artifacts & literature. An integral part of our mission is in the education of people in the importance of early railways to our developing nation. Free school visits to the railway museum are available during the school year by arrangement. The Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society Incorporated also leases the historically significant Carterton Rail yard & intends building a new replica NZR style goods shed/workshop to house a shunting locomotive currently housed off site. The new building will enable members to undertake rail wagon restoration projects under cover. Members train other member/volunteers in operating machinery used in the maintenance of our sites.
