Mission: Te Matau Trust seeks to construct a world class Marine Centre of Excellence in Nelson that tells the story of the people of the Nelson Tasman region's interaction with the ocean - from the waka to the world. We aim to celebrate and share the values and history of Nelson's blue water economy strength and provide a forum to discuss ocean-related issues including the effects of climate change. Our stories will commemorate the development of the fishing and aquaculture industry from traditional Maori fishing techniques to the modern commercial fishing industry. It is envisaged that the facility will have three major themes together with various over lapping and shared facilities. These themes are: • The history, development and sustainability of the modern fishing industry; • The kaitiatikanga (stewardship) of the ocean by Maori and its modern expresssion • The importance of innovative science and education for the ongoing conservation of the marine environment.
