The Canterbury English Speaking Union Trust was established 'to advance education by furthering knowledge of the English language and the art of communication and understanding between English-speaking peoples within New Zealand’ (Canterbury English Speaking Union Trust Deed, p.2). The charitable purposes of the Trust include, but are not limited to: 1.The promotion of English in public speaking and debate; 2.The promotion of the use of English in drama and literature; 3.Encouraging the enjoyment and constructive use of English through educational programmes; 4.Enabling New Zealanders to undertake scholarships, grants or awards for the study of the English language and its use; 5.Providing funds in New Zealand towards student or teacher exchange programmes, or other such objectives; 6.Providing funds in New Zealand for the supply of suitable aids for teaching the English language.
