About
• To promote, restore and preserve the former Templeton family flax mill heritage buildings and mill machinery at Otaitai Bush, Riverton, incorporating machinery from the former Otanomomo flax mill, (South Otago) for the benefit and education of the Riverton and Southland community, as well as enlightening and entertaining visitors to the area. • To operate a working Flax Mill Heritage Museum by demonstrating and displaying flax milling machinery and memorabilia at the Otaitai Bush flax mill, which is representative of flax mills that operated in Southland and Otago from the early 1900s up to 1972. • To keep alive, practice and retain the technical and labour skills and heritage craft of a flax miller, including flax cutting, classing, stripping and fibre scutching processing; together with machinery maintenance and tuning required to produce flax fibre hemp for its various end uses. • To support art and Maori weavers by supplying muka fibre for creative art and traditional weaving.
