Mission: Nelson Community Patrol is amongst the oldest patrols in New Zealand and was started over 30 years ago. Our Patrol is run from the Nelson Police Station will full support of Police management. We have a vehicle with a police radio. We have two patrollers on duty Friday and Saturday night in the vehicle and one patroller monitoring the CCTV cameras around Nelson. We are all volunteers. After a Police Briefing we start patrol at approx 10.15 pm and stay out till about 3.00 am on average. Later if requested by Police. We patrol the areas such as schools, churches, parks, beaches, alley ways and off street buildings etc. the Police are short of staff and if we can show a presence in these areas it lets people know that we are around. We also respond to and often the first on scene called in by the public. Our job is not to intervene unless necessary but to observe and advise Police what is happening so they can task staff appropriately. all patrollers undertake training for this role.
